:SpC <:> /I -l /, (' si :-J , /--• 'L'D ( ~~ ! c': . :,,' L./ . . f..., .( ........ ,' -~.'; -, " , , "J{I Comprising the fastest-growing sector of the population in the Midwestern United States, Hispanics meet with a mix of anger, confusion, resentment, and apathy in our communities. In an effort to help combat these negative reactions and lower the cultural and linguistic barrier, I participated in a semester-long seminar course at the Virginia Ball Center for Creative Inquiry led by Dr. Chin-Sook Pak in the Fall of 2003. This thesis covers several major issues related to this topic and is comprised of a research paper on illiteracy among the Hispanic population of the United States, a compilation of weekly journal entries detailing the service learning that took place, a final reflection paper based on seminar experiences, and a presentation of the service work done for the Hamilton County Courts, in the form of a curriculum created for a class intended to instruct Hispanics about court processes and what their legal rights are.
